Well, here goes.

Blog entry number one. I’ve never been much of a writer, at least not in the personal sense. But, my flowers peers have assured me that I’m missing the boat on blogging, and I better get myself on the radar. So, here I am world, The Flower House reporting for duty.

I feel like I should start by introducing myself. My name is Kirbey, and I am the owner and currently the sole full-time employee of The Flower House. I started my business a little over two years ago in the hopes that I could juggle being a Mama with my passion for floral design. I had been working in a retail shop in a local suburb, and while I absolutely LOVED it, it was just getting too tough to manage working a retail job and balance that with home life and a hubby who works thirteen hour days. I’m sure a million of your Mama’s out there can relate.

It was a tough decision to leave the shop. I loved the people I worked with, and the hustle and bustle of day to day work at a retail shop in something I truly enjoy. I think it comes from years of working in bars and restaurants—that joy of the “rush” and the influx of people and their different personalities, stories and the fact that no day is really the same. I thrive in those types of environments. In fact, my favorite events to do are something called a “flip”. They’re typically Weddings where the same space is being used for both the ceremony and the reception. So, once the ceremony concludes, you’ve got to bust your rear to get this entire space turned around and transformed into a gorgeous reception. All the while, guests are mingling nearby at the cocktail reception. Most people hate this, but, I love it. There’s something so satisfying about being able to pull off an event in such a short period of time. Such an adrenaline rush.

But, I digress, let’s not get too far off of my introduction. I already mentioned the whole part about leaving the retail shop, and opening The Flower House, which brings us all up to speed. So, with all of that said, I now have a small, family-run business that I operate out of a studio. Initially I thought long and hard about opening up a retail space too, but in the end, I decided to allow my business to grow organically and see where it takes me as opposed to putting my eggs all into one basket and hoping the cookies didn’t crumble. Not to mention I didn’t want to get myself into the same predicament I had been in before. I wanted to allow myself the time and ability to be flexible while my kids were young and to not be tied to a retail space and all that comes along with that.

Oh, and perhaps you’d like to know a bit about these kids I speak of. Well, I have twins, Olivia & Lucia who just turned six, and my Letty who will be four in November. We run what I like to call a “Girls Club” over here. I am one of four girls, and now I have three daughters. They’re on the move constantly, and keeping up with them while trying to grow a business is something I am truly grappling with every.single.damn.day. I mean we’re two years in over here and I’m just not getting around to writing a blog. Pretty organized right?!? I think so. Also, while we’re being all personal and getting to know me, I have a wonderful Husband named Mario. We’ve been married for seven years and we’ve managed to have three kids, three houses, and three dogs in that time span. Not too shabby for seven years. We’ve also got a bunny named Harry (best pet we’ve got goin, no offense to the others). A big ole’ Rottweiler name Bo and the newest addition to our crazy house, a French Bulldog named Winnie. Needless to say, my house shall now be referred to as The Mad House from here on out.

So- now you know. This is how I got where I am now. Of course, there was some other Life that happened in-between it all, but you get the gist of things. I hope I’ve given you a little taste of what life is like over here at The Flower House. While I don’t think this blog will ever be a formal “just about flowers” blog, as that’s just not me, you can expect to read lots of aid bits about my week to week as well as the Wedding’s and Event’s that I’ll be working on. Next up: a bridal shower, a magazine photo shoot and a big ole’ September Wedding. Until next time…
